Red Sox Rookies Get Hazed...But Look Oh So Pretty!

Red Sox veterans dressed their rookies on Thursday as part of the team's annual hazing ritual. Before beating the Yankees 10-8, the Sox forced their rookies to wear these hysterical costumes on the train ride from Boston to New York.

Amongst the Bean Town super heroes were Robert Manuel ("Macho Libre"; my personal fav), Felix Doubront (sexy lifeguard), Lars Anderson (court jester), Ryan Kalish (Reno 9-1-1 cop), Daniel Nava (Batgirl), Matt Fox (Mr. Incredible) and Robert Coello (as something involving lederhosen & pink leotard).

The tradition dates back several years and involves forcing the Rookies to dress up during the team's last regular-season road trip of the season. Costumes from previous years include sexy cheerleaders, Wizard of Oz characters, and even a controversial Teletubby costume.

Always a fan of innocuous hazing rituals, I have to give props to the Rookies for rocking their outfits! You boys may not have made the play-offs this year, but you look damn fine in those short shorts.

Boston is Blowing Up Like Charles Barkley

Last night the Celtics, the Bruins, and the Red Sox won, bringing much joy to Boston sports fans.  Much to Cav supporter Josh Cribbs' dismay, Bron Bron and his crew got their asses whooped in Cleveland.  Not that we at CCUB need another reason to dislike the state of Ohio, but the Cavs certainly didn't give us one with the 104-86 loss to the obviously superior Celtics.

In other Boston sporting news, Patriot Leigh Bodden attended last night Bruins game.  The 3-2 victory not only propelled the Bruins along in the playoffs, but also made Leigh a hockey fan!

Finally, the Red Sox beat the Angels by, what some would call, a landslide. Final score 17-8. Particularly like Pedroia's home run Dustin is my bf!!! :)

Keep up the good work Boston! (Although, personally, I'm a Red Wings fan...)

Jay-Z Sues Ortiz

Jay-Z

Jay-Z has filed a lawsuit against Boston Red Sox hitter David "Big Papi" Ortiz for stealing his club name "40/40". Ortiz recently opened a bar in the Dominican under the name "Forty/Forty", which he claims represents his 40 homers and 40 stolen bases in one season. Jay-Z, who says Ortiz knew about the chain since he's been a guest at his bars, is seeking $5 mil in damages. Considering Jay-Z is a notorious die-hard Yankees fan, I've got to wonder... with a net worth of $500 million, is this really about the $5 million or the fact that homeboy plays for the Red Sox?

The Yankees Suck

As predicted, the Yankees suck and lost to the Red Sox last night.  I hope all you Yankees fans feel all warm and fuzzy inside.  It's like spending $2,000 on a Prada purse on ebay and when it arrives, finding out it's a fake and you can't even return it.  Damn!

Garciaparra Retires with the Red Sox

Nomar Garciaparra

Nomar Garciaparra will undoubtedly go down in baseball history as one of the greats. Six-time All Star, Silver Slugger Award recipient, and one of only 13 players to ever hit two grand slams in a single game, Boston fans in particular will recall his name in reference to some of the greatest players of our generation. And while Red Sox fans will always think of Garciaparra as their own, it turns out Garciaparra felt the same way. Which is why yesterday he signed a one-day ceremonial contract with the Red Sox to be able to retire in the same uniform he started in. Although Nomar went on to play for the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers and Oakland Athletics after his 14-year career with the Red Sox, his heart had always remained in Boston.

Lowell Bids Boston Farewell

Mike Lowell has been traded by the Red Sox to Texas. Following 2008 surgery Lowell has had a tough go in Boston and with a $12 million bill attached to him, it makes sense to get a more consistent player. Max Ramirez will be joining the Sox. Ramirez is a minor league catcher and looking to fill the shoes of Boston's aging franchise catcher, Jason Varitek.

Is Anyone Else SICK of A-Rod and Jeter??

I cannot bear to look at A-Rod or Derek Jeter for one more second...and it is making watching the world series quite difficult. A-Rod, what is with the stupid face you keep making where you pucker your lips and squint your eyes when you know you’re on camera?! Seriously. How about you just focus on hitting the ball? And Jeter, you could not be more awkward. Everyone talks about you like you’re something to look at, but every time I’m forced to look at you, you contort your face into this goofy and awkward expression. And keep your eyebrows down! Why are you always raising one?!

As a Boston Red Sox fan I find myself in the uncomfortable position of having to root for the Phillies as they try to win back-to-back World Series Championships. I’m uncomfortable with this because it downplays the awesomeness of the Sox winning Championships in 2004 and again in 2007. Also we’re only leading Philly and the Giants in overall World Championship wins by 2 championships, and if the Phillies win the series this year they’ll only trail us by 1. Still, my overall hatred for the Yankees, combined with these 2 clowns and they’re stupid faces really leave me with no other option…Go Phillies!

You know its a good night when...

Kobe is getting beat 49-37 at the half. One for 10 from the three and shooting only 33% overall, not to mention being out rebounded 22 to 14!

And, of course, the Yankees just blew their lead against the BoSox because apparently they really don't want to beat their arch rival this season. Or maybe it's just because all that money isn't worth it as evidenced by the fact that Sabathia's lead is now... well, a deficit. What good is a starter with no closer? In this economy, so offensive...

Just to rub it in...

The Yankees have not won a single game against the Red Sox this season. And, as if to add insult to injury, no one even wants to buy A-Rod's book. Personally, I would not take A-Rod for the literate type. After all, his own wife showed up at one of his games sporting a shirt that said F A-Rod which generally screams "trashy" to me. And, not to be overly stereotypical, but I have generally found trashy people don't read and write as well as, say, not so trashy people. Additionally, it really makes me wonder whether A-Rod's confessions of steroid use were to sell books Canseco style? I'm just saying...

Simmons: Confronting my worst nightmare

Simmons: Confronting my worst nightmare

Posted using ShareThis

As a preliminary matter, I am not so sure I believe a 6 and a half year old is really giving Dad and Grandpa such a hard time about such serious issues. Perhaps more importantly, I find it somewhat hard to believe that a kid so young is less naive than Ruby... but I guess you never know. I have been equally surprised by the wealth of knowledge of children that age in the past. The reality, of course, is he got that information from somewhere and because I don't think a 6 year old was reading the sports section every day in 2004, he must have gotten this information from Dad... or someone. So, although it's a nice little story, I'm not really buying the plot line. But, I digress.

The real issue here is that it's not cheating if everyone else is doing it. If we are suggesting that the Red Sox "cheated" in the 2003-04 season and World Series and, perhaps more importantly that year (as it is most years), the American League Championship Series, I think the relevant question is did the Red Sox have an unfair advantage? Of course, as Simmons makes clear in his article, any "cheating" on the part of the Red Sox is entirely speculative and "nothing has been proved." But, for those watching that year, the real competition came during the ALCS when the Red Sox came back from 3-0 deficit to beat the Yankees and ultimately go on to sweep the World Series.

What a dramatic series that was! No team in major league baseball had ever come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a 7 games series. In fact, that was only the third time in North American pro sports history any team had done so. The Sox managed to tie up the 4th game and it went into extra innings... lots of 'em. To be honest, I think most Boston fans had already chalked the season up to another disappointing end of the season loss to the Yankees. I know I had. But, as I watched inning after extra inning at the bar where I was a cocktail waitress by night, we all began to have hope and, in the 12th inning, victory.

But, how many of the 2003-04 Yankees were on the Mitchell Report? A few. And how many have subsequently admitted to past steroid use? At least one. So, if the argument is that the Red Sox cheated, I simply don't buy it. Even if the speculation is true, the Sox were no better off than the Yankees. In fact, based on the Mitchell Report it is more likely the Yankees had more of an advantage because of steroid use. Moreover, the National League put up such a poor showing that year (as it does most years) in the World Series, that I simply refuse to believe that steroid use was what led to a Sox victory. And, again, I refuse to believe that not a single player on the '03-'04 Cardinals were doping.
