Super Bowl Sunday Funday

I was really excited to just sit on the couch and intently watch the Saints roll over Peyton and the Colts. However, around 2 p.m. it became clear that wasn't going to happen when Mariam took a nap on the couch and while simultaneously expressing a lack of desire to prepare her contribution to the pot luck. So, I headed to the kitchen and whipped up some mac & cheese. Then some piggies in a blanket, mozzarella sticks, taquitos, bagel bites, and various other food items. I even cooked in the dark when a fuse blew, permanently.

The experience made me realize two things. 1. I need a wife. 2. Amit needs a TV in his kitchen.

That said, I am very excited the Saints won. It was a great game with just the right amount of drama and some bizarre decisions. So, does this mean Kim Kardashian is off the market? Rumors have been swirling that the couple had a bet that if Reggie and the Saints won the Super Bowl, he would propose. However, Kardashian has adamantly denied the rumors, saying that the whole story has been twisted out of control after a radio interviewer suggested the arrangement.


On a final note, I hope that Peyton cries all week.

Super Bowl Preview...

On Sunday, people from across the world will tune in to watch the spectacle that is the Super Bowl. It has become much more than a football game, with commercials being carefully scrutinized and half-time shows that are like mini-Grammy concerts. While I enjoy looking at how all the various aspects of the Super Bowl come together (or, in cases such as Janet Jackson's half-time nip-slip in 2004, don't), in the end, the ultimate goal is about finally determining who the NFL champion is. However, before I delve into the preview for the actual game, I feel that it is necessary to touch upon Warren Sapp's unfortunate incident in Miami, where he apparently thought that he was still in the NFL, and decided to choke his female acquaintance. Warren, you are in the real world now. You do not play football anymore. Also, shouldn't you be focusing on getting ready for your job as an analyst for the NFL Network's Sunday Super Bowl coverage instead of partying? Just a thought.

Now, on to the game, between the two #1 seeds, the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints . Both these teams have explosive offenses and underrated defenses. While some will point to Indianapolis being the hotter team going into the Super Bowl, comfortably defeating each team they faced while the Saints needed Brett Favre's belief that he is still in his 20's to get to this point, the reality is that the Saints played the #2 seed in the NFC, while the Colts faced a Cinderella story in the #6 seeded New York Jets, which had already played two tough games on the road. Also, not that fan support always matters, but the Saints are clearly America's team, as they have never won a Super Bowl and would be a feel-good story for the country and the city of New Orleans.

According to ESPN, the current line for the game is Indianapolis by 5.5, but the Colts could be without some of their top players, making the line potentially even less relevant. Defensive End Dwight Freeney, one of the top players at his position in the league, did not practice yesterday, and it is unknown whether he will be able to play/be effective. Losing him would be a huge blow, as the Colts need to put pressure on stud Saints QB Drew Brees to slow down the Saint's prolific aerial attack. Star receiver Reggie Wayne among others for the Colts is injured going into the game.

If the Colts were fully healthy, I would not hesitate in picking them to win the game, as they have been in this situation before, and have the biggest weapon available in quarterback Peyton Manning. But with their injuries, and the energy the Saints have going into the game, I think that the teams are pretty much dead even. And the only way to settle this close matchup is to involve personal preferences. Indianapolis has former Michigan Wolverine stud running back Michael Hart. New Orleans doesn't. Indianapolis wins 28-24. And if I'm wrong, I and most of the rest of America will still be happy. It's a win-win situation.

Peyton Likely to Reclaim Title

Jim Irsay of the Indianapolis Colts wants to extend Peyton Manning's contract to make him the highest paid NFL Quarterback in the league. This doesn't bother me. What does bother me is that currently Eli Manning is the highest paid QB in the league. Really?! Eli!? Honestly, Eli about as good (or bad) as Tony Romo. They look sorta pretty but when it comes down to it, they're not Joe Montana.

So, I believe that Petyon should absolutely reclaim the title of highest paid QB in the league. Additionally, I hope the emotional turmoil of playing the Saints breaks Peyton's will and he flops like Favre did against Eli back in '08.

NFL News: Prince writes a song for the Minnesota Vikings...

The Minnesota Vikings play at the New Orleans Saints this weekend in a matchup of the top two seeded teams in the NFC. It should be a good game, with two high-powered offenses and their Pro Bowl QBs going at it down in the Bayou for a shot at the Super Bowl. While I normally don't have a vested interest in either team, I know that I'll be rooting for Drew Brees and the Saints to pull this one out. While some might be rooting for New Orleans primarily because they don't want to see the 40 year-old dinosaur Brett Favre get another ring, I will be rooting for New Orleans so that I don't have to hear Prince's new Minnesota Vikings song, "Purple and Gold".



Yes. Prince wrote a song for the Minnesota Vikings. And don't get it confused with Purple Rain, because this song is awful. I feel bad for Prince, who was once one of the best performers out there (but, as this song has shown, has clearly experienced some tough times recently). But I feel worse for the Minnesota Vikings, who have to identify with this song, which sounds like a patriotic hymn gone wrong. At least the Vikings also have Brett Favre's signature hit, "Pants On the Ground", to offset this dud.



Now, in regards to actual football, I will give my picks for this weekend.

Indianapolis 24 New York Jets 14 (Mark Sanchez can't keep it going forever, and Peyton Manning has been in this situation before)

Colts Setting Records

The Colts win over the Broncos today marked their 22nd consecutive regular season win. The Colts also hold the NFL record for most wins in a decade at 114. Peyton is also pretty good looking, which we always like. Nonetheless, as a Patriots fan, I can't say that I like him...

Patriot's Brutal Loss Sunday Night

I think my friend Rob put it best when he said that watching the New England Patriots lose to the Colts on Sunday night was “like someone ripped my heart out, stomped on it, shoved it back in my chest along with eight sticks of dynamite, sewed me back up, resuscitated me, and then blew me to Kingdom Come”.

The Pats were up by 13 until the Colts scored with 2:23 left in the 4th quarter. With 2:08 remaining, (up by 6), New England decided to go for it on 4th and 2 on their own 28 yard line. True to form, referee Scott Green made another suspect call (can someone please give this man a refresher on forward progress?!), and gave the Colts the ball back. The Colts ended up scoring another touchdown for the win.

While I’m still optimistic about the Patriots’ chances in the playoffs given their (mostly) strong performance in Indianapolis, what really concerns me is that this win dashes any hope I had of NOT seeing Payton Manning on TV commercials this year. Seriously, I can think of 50 professional athletes I would rather see…hotter, less annoying, less gumpy…did I mention less annoying??
