Tips to Watching Football – Part 3

Understanding the running game/who’s to blame if the run gets stuffed? Watch the helmet of the lead blocker!

Football 101: A running back (RB) is the guy who gets the ball from the Quarterback and tries to run (rush) down field. The lead blocker is the player running running ahead of the ball carrier (usually the fullback or lineman) to clear a path for the runner. The RB follows the lead blocker and keys on that guy's helmet.

Famous Running Backs: Emmitt Smith, Tiki Barber, OJ Simpson

What to watch: If the lead blocker’s helmet is outside the body of the defender he’s blocking, the RB needs to run to the outside. If the lead blocker’s helmet is inside the body of the defender, the RB needs to run to the inside. If the helmet was outside the defender, but the RB cut to the inside, then the RB f-ed up. If the RB cuts to the correct side and gets stuffed then the blocker f-ed up (ineffective block).
