Beckham Blows Achilles and Chances at World Cup

David Beckham tore his Achilles tendon on Sunday during the final minutes against Chievo Verona. The injury will cost the hotty his final chance to play in the World Cup.

Not just a pretty thing to look at, Beckham is (for the most part) universally regarded as an exceptional soccer player as well as a gracious and well respected competitor. While CCUB will very much miss the opportunity to watch him during the 2010 World Cup, I think this injury brings to light to another issue plaguing several World Cup teams whose players also play in/train for the Premier league. As explained in Kuper and Szymanski's Soccernomics, the Premier league's top level of play forces players to play at peak performance levels on a regular basis. This causes the risk of injury and/or fatigue to be very high. Perhaps if England's World Cup team didn't have so many of its' players playing in the Premier league, it might win a World Cup championship sometime this century.
