Tips to Watching Football – Part 1

Do you ever wonder how football people are able to call football plays before they happen? It turns out a lot of plays can be determined by either watching the players helmets or their butts. Today’s tip is regarding how to determine if the offense is going to run or pass.

Is the play going to be a run or a pass? Watch the helmets of the Offensive linemen once the ball is snapped!

Football 101: The offense linemen are the offensive players squatting at the line of scrimmage. This includes the Center (guy in front of the Quarterback) 2 Guards (guys on either side of the center), and 2 Tackles (guys who flank the guards/guys on the end).

What to watch #1: Pre-snap stance of left tackle. If he’s low with his hand on the ground =most likely a run play. If he’s standing taller with no hand on the ground = likely to be a pass play.

= run play = pass play

What to watch #2: The height of the offensive linemen’s helmets once the ball is snapped. If their helmets rise up (dropping back into pass protection) = pass play. If they stay low (run-blocking) = running play.
