Michigan sports recap 1/24-1/31

Let's be honest: Everyone might say they have a particular favorite college team, but deep down in their hearts, there is a unified passion (even among Spartans and Buckeyes) for the Michigan Wolverines. But often times, the "Michigan difference" is only examined through the lense of the football, men's basketball, or hockey team. In reality, there's a reason why Michigan finished fifth in the directors' cup rankings last year; It's because they have a wide variety of talented intercollegiate teams. In this week's recap, I'll look at the Michigan women's tennis team and Michigan Men's Swimming and Diving.

The Michigan Women's tennis team has gotten off to a 2-0 start as they have begun competitive play, with a dominating 7-0 opening win over Western Michigan followed by an impressive win on Friday over #16 South Carolina in Fayetteville, Ark. This is a young team, with only one senior (Tania Mahtani), but in the match against South Carolina, the Wolverines showed impressive poise by coming back from a 3-1 deficit with three singles victories. Junior Denise Muresan clinched the victory, and the #19 Wolverines face the hometown #18 Arkansas Razorbacks tomorrow before heading back to Ann Arbor.

The Men's Swimming and Diving team is currently 3-0 on the season, and 1-0 in the Big Ten. On Friday, they traveled to rival country in Columbus, Ohio to take on host #9 Ohio State, Northwestern, and Penn State. Led by sophomore Dan Madwed, who won both the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard freestyle, the #6 Wolverines took care of business, winning all but two swimming events to take a solid lead over the other three Big Ten schools involved. They will conclude the meet tomorrow.

The year may be a tough one for some Michigan sports, but others have continued to prove that Michigan sports as a whole are the leaders and the best.
